This October, The Jed Foundation (JED) honors Substance Abuse Prevention Month by advocating for greater understanding about the link between youth substance misuse and mental health. In particular, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictioncenter.com\/addiction\/addiction-and-suicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance misuse can increase the risk of suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013which is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/vsrr\/vsrr024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-leading cause of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Americans between the ages of 10 and 34.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is Substance Abuse\/Misuse, and How Does It Affect Youth?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/understanding-substance-abuse-and-addiction-disorders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the use of substances, including alcohol, prescription medications, and drugs, in an improper or unhealthy manner. However, experts have started to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/understanding-substance-abuse-and-addiction-disorders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from this term because of the shame it can perpetuate, and instead prefer to use substance misuse or the diagnostic term: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/substance-use-and-mental-health#:~:text=A%20substance%20use%20disorder%20(SUD,most%20severe%20form%20of%20SUDs.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance use disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SUD). Regardless of the name, substance misuse has become increasingly common in the United States: Drug overdose deaths have tripled since 1990; among high school students, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/substance-use\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% report using illicit drugs and 14% report misusing prescription opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as of 2022. Alcohol consumption has also become a source of concern, as more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/underage-drinking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all alcoholic beverages consumed by youth are used when binge-drinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, even as the number of young adults with substance use disorders rises, few receive treatment. In 2018, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/young-adults#:~:text=Need%20Help%3F,Services%20Locator%20to%20get%20help.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 in 10 of the 5.1 million young adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> living with substance use disorders went untreated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance misuse can be especially harmful to young people. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/mental-health-disorders-and-substance-use\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teenage brains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not yet fully developed, so the effects from drugs of abuse are magnified, leading teens to become dependent more quickly than adults. This, coupled with the fact that many young people turn to alcohol and drug use to cope with intense emotions that they are not yet otherwise equipped to manage, makes them more susceptible to developing substance use disorders. Even though substance misuse may seem like an \u201cadult\u201d problem, it poses a unique threat to younger populations. Today, that threat is growing at an alarming rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mental Health Issues Exacerbate Substance Misuse\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are any number of reasons that a teenager or young adult may turn to drugs of abuse, but one of the most common relates to mental health. If left untreated, almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/mental-health-disorders-and-substance-use\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half of all teenagers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with mental health issues will develop a substance use disorder, as teens with intense negative emotions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/mental-health-disorders-and-substance-use\/#:~:text=stacked%20against%20them%3F-,Why%20are%20kids%20with%20mental%20health%20disorders%20prone%20to%20substance%20use%3F,-Kids%20who%20are\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may turn to drugs and alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to numb that pain or fear. Additionally, substance use can make teens who are already struggling with their mental health more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/substance-use\/index.htm#:~:text=Drug%20use%20is%20associated%20with%20sexual%20risk%20behavior%2C%20experience%20of%20violence%2C%20and%20mental%20health%20and%20suicide%20risks.2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prone to suicidal behavior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To best address substance misuse in young adults, it must be treated at the root: mental health. One study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27015718\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-thirds of adolescents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who develop substance use disorders also experienced at least one mental health problem. That\u2019s why substance misuse services are one of the pillars of JED\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/our-approach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention for Colleges and Universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Substance use is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictioncenter.com\/addiction\/addiction-and-suicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factor for suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in teenagers with depression. Ignoring the role of substance misuse in mental health means ignoring a key element in suicide prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, mental health is not the only avenue of treatment. Substance dependency is both physical and mental, and requires a more concentrated effort in many areas of a person\u2019s life. But by increasing the quality and availability of mental health care, it may be possible to forge a future where struggling young people don\u2019t feel the need to turn to substance misuse as a coping mechanism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There\u2019s Still More to Be Done\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving access to mental health care is just one pillar of substance use disorder care, but despite the array of effective treatments, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictioncenter.com\/addiction\/addiction-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> struggling with SUD receive treatment. The most cited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stories.usatodaynetwork.com\/stateofemergency\/treatment-barriers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">barriers to care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are lack of insurance coverage and cost of treatment, but there are also government restrictions around who can access care (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/issue-briefs\/2022\/09\/overview-of-opioid-treatment-program-regulations-by-state\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly opioid treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and how long patients can use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfyi.org\/news\/articles\/most-people-who-need-addiction-treatment-dont-get-it-yet-many-state-laws-limit-access\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication-assisted treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAT).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of insurance coverage and financial status, all treatment options should be made available to anyone seeking support. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7241222\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence-based treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as broad-based screening, peer support, and MAT are proven effective, and can better prevent relapses in the future. Another key aspect of support requires everyone to address the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp1917360\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounding substance misuse. Much of the current language for substance use disorder places fault and shame on the victim, making it harder for people to reach out. Even more worrisome is the fact that this stigma may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp1917360\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect how physicians act <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toward people with substance use disorders. It is vital to approach substance misuse with sympathy and understanding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/set-to-go\/mental-health-and-substance-abuse-problems-the-teenage-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teenagers and young adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know they do not have to battle substance use disorder alone. Therefore, it\u2019s important that those around them <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/understanding-substance-abuse-and-addiction-disorders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop a deeper understanding of substance misuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Taking the time to learn about the warning signs, causes, and treatments\u00a0 of substance misuse can make all the difference. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/news-views\/if-i-could-do-it-over-understanding-substance-misuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening lines of communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an essential first step. We hope that these JED resources can help young people and their loved ones connect and determine effective next steps toward protecting their health, while encouraging experts in education, health
