{"id":13256,"date":"2023-02-22T19:58:13","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T19:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/?p=13256"},"modified":"2025-05-30T18:01:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T18:01:16","slug":"to-support-black-youth-mental-health-we-must-look-to-community-based-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/to-support-black-youth-mental-health-we-must-look-to-community-based-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"To Support Black Youth Mental Health, We Must Look to Community-Based Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the U.S. Surgeon General\u2019s 2021 Advisory on Protecting Youth Mental Health, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/surgeon-general-youth-mental-health-advisory.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black children (under 13) are almost twice as likely to die by suicide than their white peers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/pdfs\/mm7206a4-H.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide rates for Black youths (ages 10-24) rose significantly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2018 to 2021. Compounding the issue, Black Americans face <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0190740918311204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">barriers to care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that make it harder to seek help, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Your-Journey\/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions\/Black-African-American#:~:text=mental%20health%20outcomes.-,Stigma,-Negative%20attitudes%20and\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigma of discussing mental health challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adds an additional hurdle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can be done to halt and begin to reverse the harm that is being done? There is no simple, one-size-fits-all solution. A broad, coordinated approach is necessary. The Jed Foundation (JED) advocates eliminating barriers to mental health care and addressing broader issues that affect the mental health of Black youths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in order to get started, it\u2019s essential to understand the issues at play\u2060 \u2014 and our options for resolving them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Status of Black Youth Mental Health\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black youths are at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apaservices.org\/advocacy\/news\/black-youth-mental-health#:~:text=Black%20youth%20in%20the%20United,and%20other%20mental%20health%20problems.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk for depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anxiety, and other mental health struggles than their non-Black peers. The CDC reported that suicide is increasing at a faster rate for Black youths than it is for any other racial or ethnic group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/pdfs\/mm7206a4-H.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36.6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reasons for this cannot be traced back to one specific cause. Studies have shown that experiences with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2819909\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racial discrimination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Your-Journey\/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions\/Black-African-American\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial and institutional barriers to care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31130-9\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police killings of Black Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are just some of the many contributing factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, there is not one specific solution. Getting mental health care may seem like a good place to start, but it\u2019s not always feasible. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.primarycare.hms.harvard.edu\/perspectives\/articles\/mental-health-unaffordable\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often a prohibitive factor. Unfortunately, even those who can handle the cost may not have access. The United States is struggling with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2022\/11\/mental-health-care-strains\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortage of therapists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And then it comes down to the quality of care provided: Most clinicians <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Blogs\/NAMI-Blog\/March-2022\/Addressing-the-Lack-of-Diversity-in-the-Mental-Health-Field\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are white<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can make it difficult for Black Americans to find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/how-to-find-a-culturally-competent-therapist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">care from someone who understands their background<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Speaking with a culturally sensitive therapist is often key when youths are healing from racial trauma.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1808307116\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Black youths may never be encouraged to seek help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first place; caregivers and educators often fail to recognize their struggles due to a lack of understanding on how mental health issues present in teens and young adults of different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Black youths may demonstrate warning signs in different ways than other young people \u2060 \u2014ways that are often interpreted as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacap.org\/aacap\/Policy_Statements\/2022\/AACAP_Policy_Statement_Increased_Suicide_Among_Black_Youth_US.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behavioral problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than trauma, anxiety, or depression. As a result, a punitive approach is taken: Black youths exhibiting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1808307116#:~:text=Research%20using%20administrative%20datasets%20and,punishments%20(5%2C%206).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of mental health challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to be suspended from school, expelled, or sent into the juvenile justice system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to recognize how the combination of different identities can present additional challenges. The phenomenon \u2014 sometimes called\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ViDtnfQ9FHc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intersectionality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2060\u2014 helps us understand the way multiple forms of inequality interact and compound to affect youth mental health. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/research-briefs\/black-lgbtq-youth-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black youths who are also transgender or nonbinary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> face a higher risk of suicide than those with only one marginalized identity. The youths\u2019 multiple identities need to be considered when seeking solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Need for Large-Scale, Community-Based Solutions\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the hurdles outlined above can only be removed through large-scale reform. The responsibility should not rest solely on parents and caretakers, much less young people themselves. Evidence-based solutions must <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/ED583600.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respond to the different and unique experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among people of all races. Therefore, we must turn to community-based solutions that reach individuals where they are and when they need it most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important first step is improving access to culturally competent mental health care that addresses the needs of people of all backgrounds. This is easier said than done, especially given the therapist shortage, but it can be facilitated through a number of avenues. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/opinion-the-fight-for-black-lives-needs-to-happen-in-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools, for one, must become safe havens for students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with suicide intervention programs and strong support systems for Black students. Schools are one of the most effective environments for early intervention, because that is where young people spend a majority of their time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More work must also be done to help ease the shortage of mental health care experts trained in culturally responsive care. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacap.org\/aacap\/Policy_Statements\/2022\/AACAP_Policy_Statement_Increased_Suicide_Among_Black_Youth_US.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocating for scholarship programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that give Black youth the chance to study medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and social work is a step in the right direction. The field of medicine must also evolve as well. Historically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/1745691620927709\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most psychiatric research has been done by and for white people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leaving a profound knowledge gap that continues to endanger Black Americans. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/watsoncoleman.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/full_taskforce_report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research topics proposed by Black scientists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are less likely to be funded than topics proposed by their white counterparts\u2060 \u2014 a loss to the scientific community as a whole. Research that looks at risk factors, as well as protective factors, stressors, and disparities unique to Black youths, can improve understanding of the obstacles they face and how to address them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, funding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacap.org\/aacap\/Policy_Statements\/2022\/AACAP_Policy_Statement_Increased_Suicide_Among_Black_Youth_US.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social programs and resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that reach all young people, especially Black youth, can foster a sense of belonging and support. Community-building is a strong, well-established method for suicide prevention and improving youth mental health.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>JED\u2019s Commitment and Call to Action<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jed Foundation recognizes that Black teens and young adults face unique mental health challenges. JED is committed to doing the work that needs to be done <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/about\/diversity-equity-inclusion-antiracism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to support and protect them so that they are equipped to thrive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But coordinated reform is needed in all aspects of care. It\u2019s past time for society to pay attention and prioritize mental health care and suicide prevention for Black youths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According
