N<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early half (48%) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of people who made a serious suicide attempt said they had first thought about making that attempt only minutes prior, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19026258\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that, during an acute crisis, a person\u2019s survival may come down to what methods are readily available<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and how lethal they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens and adolescents have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/suicide\/facts\/disparities-in-suicide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower suicide rates than adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but much higher rates of seriously considering suicide (at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/data\/yrbs\/pdf\/YRBS_Data-Summary-Trends_Report2023_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% for high school students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/NSDUH-DR-FFR3-2015\/NSDUH-DR-FFR3-2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% for those over 18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Youth suicide rates have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/ucd-icd10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistently increased since 2008<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/means-matter\/means-matter\/survival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vast majority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people who become suicidal recover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jed Foundation (JED) is dedicated to protecting mental health and preventing suicide for teens and young adults. Because firearms are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M19-1324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most lethal method of suicide attempt <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31791066\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately 90% fatal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JED believes that promoting gun safety is integral to protecting the nation\u2019s youth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what the numbers tell us:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firearms are used in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/controller\/datarequest\/D76;jsessionid=AD41581277F0FD06912EB44A2F79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of suicides for young people ages 15-24.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">States with higher rates of gun ownership have higher rates of suicide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23975641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of elevated numbers of firearm suicides<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school students in rural areas report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">access to a handgun at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2784791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice the rate of their urban peers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0091743522001141?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 80%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the firearms used in youth suicides were owned by parents or other family members<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12204922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those who make serious attempts and survive do not go on to die by suicide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that limiting access to the most lethal form of suicide attempt method will save lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone is in a moment of acute distress, simply buying them time allows them to find support or treatment, sustain recovery, and go on to enjoy a fulfilling life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why JED\u2019s work involves collaborating with schools, communities, firearm owners, and others to reduce the chances of a young person accessing a gun during a suicidal crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving young people\u2019s lives is the common ground upon which caring leaders and community members can meet to initiate meaningful discussions and advance substantial change. Greater gun safety is possible through a collective effort between families, schools, gun owner groups, clinicians, and legislators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jed Foundation recommends the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Families <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must take an active role in preventing youth firearm suicides. Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/means-matter\/basic-suicide-facts\/where\/#:~:text=About%20three%2Dquarters%20of%20suicide,the%20hospital%20(NVISS%20data).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three-quarters of suicides occur at home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is not recommended that gun owners hide their firearms, because determined young people will find them. But the safe storage of guns will protect the young people who live in\u2014or visit\u2014their homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal safe storage practices should include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locking all firearms, ideally unloaded, inside a gun safe or another well-made lockbox and ensuring youth have no independent access to the keys or combination;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storing ammunition separately and securely;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using cable or trigger locks when a safe is not available or as an added layer of protection when a safe is available;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securing self-defense firearms in a manner that provides rapid access for authorized users (such as a biometric safe) but limits access for all others (including those determined to be at heightened risk for suicide); and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storing firearms away from home voluntarily and temporarily, if a young person at home is suicidal or clearly struggling until they have recovered.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Schools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can share practical, universal safe storage recommendations with students as part of health lessons or through support services, and pass along this information directly to the families of students who have been identified as being at risk for suicide.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gun Owner Groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like gun retailers and firearms instructors, should promote firearms safety to gun owners, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/means-matter\/gun-shop-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trainings and resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> facilitated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/safety\/suicide-prevention\/nssf-afsp-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaborations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between leading organizations like the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSP) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clinicians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should learn the basic principles of the means safety movement and undergo training in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calmamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lethal means counseling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing them to inform and protect their own clients, families, and communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Legislators <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must write, sponsor, and advance bills that promote education, safe storage, background checks, age limits, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy\/analysis\/waiting-periods\/suicide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiting periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Utah offers a strong example of this type of work: The state passed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/le.utah.gov\/~2023\/bills\/static\/HB0481.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">educational bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that encourages schools to provide lethal means safety recommendations to families of children expressing suicidal thoughts. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy\/analysis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective firearm safety legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes advantage of the fact that putting time and distance between a suicidal person and highly lethal means\u2013often a gun\u2013can save that person\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JED endorses the establishment of coalitions that bring together thought leaders with diverse backgrounds, including epidemiologists, health care providers, gun owners, shooting sports organizations, educators, and policymakers. Successful examples include Virginia\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockandtalk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lock and Talk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, Washington\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saferhomescoalition.org\/what-is-a-safer-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forefront Safer Homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Utah\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liveonutah.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live On Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through shared information, pooled resources, and a common mission, these coalitions can develop and advocate for sustained policies, practices, and systems to improve firearm safety and save lives.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suicidal crises often escalate quickly.
