When you train your campus community, you create multiple layers of support \u2014 helping people identify students who may be struggling, contributing to suicide prevention efforts, and strengthening the safety net that protects everyone&#8217;s mental health. A strategically implemented mental health training program is an integral element of a comprehensive, campuswide approach to protecting student mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A note on terminology: In the past, these programs have been referred to as \u201cgatekeeper training.\u201d The term \u201cgatekeeper\u201d can feel intimidating and suggest a burden of authority that many people aren&#8217;t comfortable with. By simply calling it \u201cmental health training,\u201d we help normalize these important conversations and make support feel more accessible to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether your campus is developing new mental health training programs or refreshing existing ones, consider the following implementation steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conduct a Needs Assessment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementation requires a clear and structured approach from the beginning. The first step is to perform a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolmentalhealth.org\/resources\/needs-assessment--resource-mapping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needs assessment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that examines what\u2019s working well in your current support systems and identifies opportunities to better serve your students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your campus can establish a committee that evaluates current training, centralizes training efforts, and assesses existing attitudes and campus climate around supporting and referring students in distress. The committee can determine how to ensure training will most effectively reach groups of faculty, staff, and students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know Who to Involve in Training<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A training program should eventually reach everyone in your campus community, but start with the people who connect with students most often, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Faculty and academic advisers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are often the first point of contact for students seeking support or guidance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Support staff (e.g., dining, housekeeping, campus safety officers)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are in contact with students often.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Student groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including residence hall advisers, athletes, and representatives from student government, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/jed-greek-letter-organizations-mental-health-programs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greek-letter organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and on-campus cultural organizations. Students from these groups can serve as mental health ambassadors within their communities and help peers seek support.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know the Essential Components of Mental Health Training\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no one-size-fits-all mental health training that\u2019s best for all colleges and universities. The most impactful training will center the needs of your campus, drawing on the findings from your needs assessment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although specific elements will vary, every foundational mental health training program should teach participants to do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Identify at-risk students:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Training must teach participants to recognize <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/mental-health-warning-signs-and-when-to-ask-for-help\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warning signs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/resource\/what-factors-impact-our-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and indicators of mental health concerns, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/understanding-sadness-and-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jedfoundation.org\/understanding-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and signs of distress. This personalized approach ensures that your mental health training resonates with and supports all members of your campus community.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weigh the Utility of a Train-the-Trainer Model\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some campuses choose to train faculty, staff, and student leaders across departments to facilitate sessions rather than relying only on counseling center staff to run all of the training.
