Many people experiencing mental health-related distress are not receiving the support and care they need. For this reason, it is critical to provide equitable and centralized access to trained mental health professionals across America.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020, a person died by suicide almost every 11 minutes in the United States <\/span>(CDC)<\/span><\/a>\u2014and for 15- to 24-year-olds, suicide became the third-leading cause of death <\/span>(SAVE)<\/span><\/a>. Additionally, more than 91,000 people died from substance misuse <\/span>(CDC)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But now, access to care is only three numbers away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginning July 16, 2022, the public can text or call the <\/span>988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> This three-digit dialing code connects to the existing <\/span>National Suicide Prevention Lifeline<\/span><\/a> and is intended for anyone with <\/span>mental health-related distress\u2014such as suicidal ideation, substance misuse, or other kinds of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.<\/span><\/p>\n

988 provides an opportunity to improve the nation\u2019s response to mental health crises by reducing law enforcement involvement, which can sometimes result in injury or death. According to<\/span> The Washington Post\u2019s \u201cFatal Force\u201d data tracker<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> 14% of Americans killed by police officers in 2021 had been diagnosed with mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, it is critical for 988 to partner with community-based providers who can deliver a full range of crisis care services, such as mobile crisis teams or stabilization centers.<\/span><\/p>\n
